Humanity Has Declined (Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita) (Crunchyroll) ended much as it began: clever, funny and extremely weird.

It’s hard to categorize this. It doesn’t tell a conventional story but it’s too surreal to be called “slice of life.”

I’m reminded of the first season of Haruhi Suzumiya, not as released on DVD but as originally broadcast. Both shows were broadcast with the episodes out of chronological order. The episodes don’t so much tell a story as set up a situation, but when they are viewed in a certain order you do get a story of sorts. (Let’s hope that this time the production company has the sense not to mess with the order for the DVD release.)


Still, like Haruhi, this series doesn’t give us the answers. At most it helps us figure out what the questions are.
