As you can see from the video below there is going to be a sequel to Cardcaptor Sakura.
Apparently there will be an OVA released next September followed by a new TV series next January.
I have very mixed feelings about this. I think the original is one of the best-written anime series ever. The thing is, it had a perfect ending and there’s a real risk that any attempt at a sequel will diminish it.
I’m particularly concerned because CLAMP actually did a sort-of sequel already: the deeply disturbing Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE which, as far as I am concerned, is a non-canon alternate universe story.
Cardcaptor Sakura is a very positive, upbeat story, but if you’ve read or watched much of CLAMP’s work you can tell that they usually prefer things that are more on the sad, dark and violent side. Which is fine, I guess, but I don’t want to see such tendencies spoiling CCS.
Of course CCS did have some dark undertones which Akiyuki Shinbou explored in detail in Madoka Majica. But in CCS the dark undertones were just hints that things could go badly wrong. In the end, none of the awful possibilities ever actually happened.
Anyway I’ll be looking forward to this with a mixture of hope and dread.
