Bridesmaids–Movie Review

Some people are calling Bridesmaids a Judd Apatow movie, and that’s sort of true since he produced it. It has the same sort of raunchy humor and redemptive story arc that one would expect from one of his films, but it seems a bit smarter than average. Also it’s about chicks instead of dudes. The important thing though is that it is extremely funny.

The story is fairly predictable. Annie (Kristen Wiig) is a single thirty-something whose life sucks. Her business has failed, her roommates are morons and her boyfriend (Jon Hamm) is a jerk. (Actually he’s made it clear that he doesn’t want to be her boyfriend, or even her friend. He just likes having sex with her occasionally.)

So it is with somewhat mixed emotions that Annie learns that Lillian (Maya Rudolph) is engaged to a guy who seems very nice, not to mention rich. Lillian wants her to be Maid of Honor and of course Annie accepts. That means she has to deal with a quirky group of bridesmaids, including the inevitable raunchy party animal (Melissa McCarthy) and Helen (Rose Byrne) who is so absolutely perfect in every way that Annie would love to strangle her.

As I said, this turns out to be very funny, as long as you aren’t too squeamish or easily offended.
