It dates back to the 6th century, though it was built in its present form in 1168.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nThe main entrance to the shrine has a large stone torii flanked by lion-dogs.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/itsukushimaentrance.jpg' alt='Itsukushima Entrance' \/><\/p>\n<p><img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/otoriifromshore.jpg' alt='Otorii from Shore' \/><\/p>\n<p>This is one of the first things that one sees when entering the shrine. It may have something to do with the fact that horses were once considered the most appropriate gift to a shrine.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/sacredplastichorse.jpg' alt='Sacred Plastic Horse' \/><\/p>\n<p>At low tide one can see that the shrine is built on pier-like structures. Boats enter through it during the summer festival.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/otoriifrompier.jpg' alt='Otorii from Pier' \/><\/p>\n<p>Naturally everyone wants to be photographed with the Otorii in the background. The best spot is probably on the end of the pier where the boats land.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/atendofpier.jpg' alt='End of Pier' \/><\/p>\n<p>This entrance is also guarded by lion-dogs.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/pierkomainu.jpg' alt='Komainu' \/><\/p>\n<p><img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/pierkomainu2.jpg' alt='Komainu' \/><\/p>\n<p>This happens to be an auspicious day for a wedding, and the staff hurries to make sure that the room is ready for the ceremony.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/itsukushimastaff.jpg' alt='Staff' \/><\/p>\n<p>A bride and groom enter the shrine, followed by proud but nervous relatives.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/itsukushimabrideandgroom.jpg' alt='Bride and Groom' \/><\/p>\n<p><img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/itsukushimarelatives.jpg' alt='Relatives' \/><\/p>\n<p>A shrine this important will naturally have a display of donated barrels of sake.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/itsukushimasake.jpg' alt='Sake' \/><\/p>\n<p>A raised stage used for ceremonial dances and Noh dramas.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/itsukushimastage.jpg' alt='Stage' \/><\/p>\n<p>At low tide the Otorii sits on dry land and you can walk out to it.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/otoriilowtide.jpg' alt='Otorii at Low Tide' \/><\/p>\n<p>A spectacular pagoda sits on a hill next to the Itsukushima Shrine.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/senjokakupagoda.jpg' alt='Senjokaku Pagoda' \/><\/p>\n<p>Though this looks like a traditional Buddhist 5-story pagoda, it actually belongs to the Hokoku Shrine, commonly called the Senjokaku.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/senjokakumainbuilding.jpg' alt='Senjokaku Main Building' \/><\/p>\n<p>This was originally built as a Buddhist temple by Hideyoshi Toyotomi at the end of the 16th century.
