It claims to be &#8220;one of Japan&#8217;s Three Most Scenic Spots&#8221; (the others being the Amanohashidate sandbar and Matsushima Bay, neither of which I have seen.)<\/p>\n<p>The island was visited by Kobodaishi in they year 806 and has a number of Shingon Buddhist temples. Because of the island&#8217;s sacred status, no one is allowed to die or be born there. I don&#8217;t know what the penalty is for breaking this rule.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nTo get to the island you must take a ferry, which runs every half hour.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/miyajimaferry.jpg' alt='Miyajima Ferry' \/><\/p>\n<p>The ferry passes rows of oyster farms.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/oysterfarms.jpg' alt='Oyster Farms' \/><\/p>\n<p>As the ferry approaches the terminal, the famous Otorii, the &#8220;floating&#8221; torii of the Itsukushima Shrine, can be seen to the right.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/otoriifromferry.jpg' alt='Otorii from Ferry' \/><\/p>\n<p>Deer wander everywhere on the island. They are totally unafraid of humans and you can pet them.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/kidwithdeer.jpg' alt='Kid with Deer' \/><\/p>\n<p>However they are still wild animals and should be treated with a certain amount of caution.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/stayawayfromdeerwithantlers.jpg' alt='Stay Away from Deer with Antlers' \/><\/p>\n<p><img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/deerwithantlers.jpg' alt='Deer with Antlers' \/><\/p>\n<p><img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/feedthedeer.jpg' alt='Feeding the Deer' \/><\/p>\n<p>Guidebooks warn that the deer will eat just about anything including paper shopping bags, tickets and other valuables.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/deereatingpaper.jpg' alt='Deer Eating Paper' \/><\/p>\n<p>The Omotesando shopping district is a small group of stores located midway between the ferry terminal and the Itsukushima shrine.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/girlsgoingshopping.jpg' alt='Going Shopping' \/><\/p>\n<p>A number of shops have huge machines in their windows for making &#8220;momiji manju&#8221;, a maple-leaf-shaped pastry that comes with a variety of fillings.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/momijimachine.jpg' alt='Momiji Machine' \/><\/p>\n<p><img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/momijimanju.jpg' alt='Momiji Manju' \/><\/p>\n<p>Fresh oysters are available in a number of different forms. Yum!<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/freshoysters.jpg' alt='Fresh Oysters' \/><\/p>\n<p><img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/restaurantcats.jpg' alt='Restaurant Cats' \/><\/p>\n<p>Another form of the &#8220;beckoning cat.&#8221;<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/hellokitty.jpg' alt='Hello Kitty' \/><\/p>\n<p>The world&#8217;s largest rice scoop.<br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/bigricescoop.jpg' alt='Big Rice Scoop' \/><\/p>\n<p>Actually the island is famous for rice scoops and many are sold as souvenirs.
