There was a lot of crap of course but there were also a fair number of shows that were well-made and entertaining.<\/p>\n<h1>Outstanding Anime of 2013<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Rescued-rat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Rescued-rat-550x310.jpg\" alt=\"Rescued rat\" width=\"550\" height=\"310\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-8066\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Rescued-rat-550x310.jpg 550w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Rescued-rat-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Rescued-rat-500x281.jpg 500w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Rescued-rat.jpg 956w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"\/fun\/tag\/shin-sekai-yori\/?order=asc\"><em>Shin Sekai Yori<\/em><\/a> (started Fall 2012) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crunchyroll.com\/shin-sekai-yori-from-the-new-world\">Crunchyroll<\/a>) is a solid adaptation of a serious science fiction story. It is far more sophisticated than what usually passes for sci-fi on television. This may be too dark for some tastes and is definitely not suitable for young children. I can recommend this without reservations to everyone (except perhaps for very young children.)<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s probably no coincidence that both of the &#8220;outstanding&#8221; shows are adaptations of novels (as opposed to the more common adaptations of <a href=\"\/fun\/terms-used-in-anime-reviews#manga\">manga<\/a>, <a href=\"\/fun\/terms-used-in-anime-reviews#light_novel\">light novels<\/a> or video games.)<\/p>\n<h1>Notable Anime of 2013<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Chihayafuru.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Chihayafuru-150x130.jpg\" alt=\"Chihayafuru\" width=\"150\" height=\"130\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-7354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Chihayafuru-150x130.jpg 150w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Chihayafuru-421x367.jpg 421w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Chihayafuru-344x300.jpg 344w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Chihayafuru.jpg 630w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>I praised 2012&#8217;s <a href=\"\/fun\/tag\/chihayafuru\/?order=asc\"><em>Chihayafuru<\/em><\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crunchyroll.com\/chihayafuru\">Crunchyroll<\/a>), an unusual <a href=\"\/fun\/terms-used-in-anime-reviews#shoujo\">shoujo<\/a> sports anime. It is a low-key unpretentious show but the subtle execution makes it a delight to watch.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Himegami-with-upraised-arm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Himegami-with-upraised-arm-150x84.jpg\" alt=\"Himegami with upraised arm\" width=\"150\" height=\"84\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-8842\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Himegami-with-upraised-arm-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Himegami-with-upraised-arm-550x309.jpg 550w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Himegami-with-upraised-arm-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Himegami-with-upraised-arm-500x281.jpg 500w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Himegami-with-upraised-arm.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"\/fun\/tag\/red-data-girl\/?order=asc\"><em>Red Data Girl<\/em><\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.funimation.com\/red-data-girl\/videos\">Funimation<\/a>) is a shoujo wish-fulfillment fantasy, but much better written than most. It has stronger-than-average characters and an intriguing premise based on decent historical research\/ It also has some extraordinary scenery. However it doesn&#8217;t feel like a complete story. It somehow manages to be both disturbing and funny.<\/p>\n<h1>Reserving Judgement<\/h1>\n<p>The following shows not eligible for this year&#8217;s list since they are only half over. The second season in 2013 was something else entirely. It&#8217;s common for sequels to disappoint but it is rare to see one this bad. Ultimately however it failed to provide a satisfactory story.<\/p>\n<h1>Interesting But Not to My Taste<\/h1>\n<p><em>Free!&#8211;Iwatobi Swim Club<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crunchyroll.com\/free-iwatobi-swim-club\">Crunchyroll<\/a>) featured outstanding animation effects, proving once again that Kyoto Animation is unsurpassed among TV studios. However the story seemed to be mainly an excuse to show buff young men in swimsuits. Now I&#8217;ve never objected to tasteful <a href=\"\/fun\/terms-used-in-anime-reviews#fan_service\">fan service<\/a> and turnabout is certainly fair play, but even if these were girls I would want more in a show than that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Looking back this was a fairly average year in <a href=\"\/fun\/terms-used-in-anime-reviews#anime\">anime<\/a>.
