It&#8217;s interesting but vaguely unsatisfying.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nThe show strings together a whole bunch of obscure references, most associated with the Kyoto region, including<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Myoue, an influential 13th century monk.<\/li>\n<li>A number of temples and shrines from the Kyoto area including the Kouzan-ji (which Myoue founded).<\/li>\n<li>The Choujuugiga, a set of comical illustrated scrolls kept at the Kouzan-ji, which many consider to be the first example of a Japanese <a href=\"\/fun\/terms-used-in-anime-reviews#manga\">manga<\/a>. (This is the source of the rabbit\/monkey\/frog images.)<\/li>\n<li>Lewis Carroll, particularly <em>Through the Looking Glass<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_9649\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Choujuugiga.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9649\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Choujuugiga-550x363.jpg\" alt=\"Scjene from the Choujuugiga\" width=\"550\" height=\"363\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9649\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Choujuugiga-550x363.jpg 550w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Choujuugiga-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Choujuugiga-454x300.jpg 454w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Choujuugiga.jpg 563w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9649\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Scene from the Choujuugiga<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nHowever I don&#8217;t feel that all this fits together well. It feels like somebody went around Kyoto, collected some interesting images, added some quotes from Lewis Carroll, then tried to work it all into a story.<\/p>\n<p>Worse, I find the characters unappealing. The main characters are all basically gods, but they are the sort of gods who seem to spend all their time either brooding or smashing things. It&#8217;s all rather uninspiring.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to watch a challenging <a href=\"\/fun\/terms-used-in-anime-reviews#anime\">anime<\/a> series that features complicated symbolism, non-linear storytelling and multiple universes then you would do better to watch 2011&#8217;s <a href=\"\/fun\/tag\/mawaru-penguindrum\/?order=asc\"><em>Mawaru Penguindrum<\/em><\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theanimenetwork.com\/Anime\/Penguindrum\/Info\">Anime Network<\/a>).
