Instead it was to serve as a symbol of Ieyasu&#8217;s power and dignity and to overawe the western lords (<a href=\"\/fun\/2011\/11\/03\/osaka-castle\/\">whose loyalty he had reason to suspect<\/a>)<a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Wall-and-Moat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Wall-and-Moat-489x367.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Wall and Moat\" width=\"489\" height=\"367\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7025\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Wall-and-Moat-489x367.jpg 489w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Wall-and-Moat-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Wall-and-Moat.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 489px) 100vw, 489px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Most of the enclosed area is devoted to beautifully landscaped gardens.<\/p>\n<p>The main building is called the Ninomaru Palace. No photography is allowed inside which is regrettable since the contents are very impressive.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Main-Building1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Main-Building1-534x367.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Main Building\" width=\"534\" height=\"367\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7027\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Main-Building1-534x367.jpg 534w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Main-Building1-436x300.jpg 436w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Main-Building1.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 534px) 100vw, 534px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are 33 large tatami rooms constructed with elaborately carved wood, with walls covered with exquisite paintings on gold leaf. The Tokugawa shoguns preferred to rule from their eastern capital of Edo (now Tokyo).
