Just some photographs of Nagasaki landmarks.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nThis memorial is dedicated to the Twenty-six Martyrs of Japan, 6 European missionaries and 20 Japanese Catholics who were crucified here in 1597 on the orders of Hideyoshi Toyotomi, who suspected that the missionaries were part of a foreign plot to take over Japan.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/26-Martyrs.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/26-Martyrs-489x367.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"26 Martyrs\" width=\"489\" height=\"367\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6843\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/26-Martyrs-489x367.jpg 489w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/26-Martyrs-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/26-Martyrs.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 489px) 100vw, 489px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hideyoshi&#8217;s attempt to ban Christianity died with him but was later reinstated more effectively by the Tokugawa Shoguns. The 26 Martyrs were canonized in 1862 (about the time that the ban on Christianity was finally lifted.)<\/p>\n<p>At the time I was there the plaza had only a few human visitors but numerous cats.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Cats-in-Plaza.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Cats-in-Plaza-525x367.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Cats in Plaza\" width=\"525\" height=\"367\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6844\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Cats-in-Plaza-525x367.jpg 525w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Cats-in-Plaza-429x300.jpg 429w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Cats-in-Plaza.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next to the plaza is a church dedicated to the Martyrs. The mosaic decorations are typical of Catholic churches in the area.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Martyrs-Church.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Martyrs-Church-384x367.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Martyr&#039;s Church\" width=\"384\" height=\"367\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6845\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Martyrs-Church-384x367.jpg 384w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Martyrs-Church-314x300.jpg 314w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Martyrs-Church.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 384px) 100vw, 384px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Nagasaki Peace Park with its famous sculpture was built on the site of Urakami Prison, which was leveled by the 1945 atomic bomb.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Peace-Sculpture.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Peace-Sculpture-507x367.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Peace Sculpture\" width=\"507\" height=\"367\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6846\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Peace-Sculpture-507x367.jpg 507w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Peace-Sculpture-414x300.jpg 414w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Peace-Sculpture.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 507px) 100vw, 507px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However the actual center of the blast was farther south.
