However there is a huge amount of overlap between Chinese and Japanese Buddhism, so I&#8217;m going to treat it as &#8220;close enough.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Bodhi Path at the entrance is lined with statues of Gautama Buddha&#8217;s original male disciples.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_0020-1.jpg\" alt=\"Bodhi Path\" title=\"Bodhi Path\" width=\"500\" height=\"358\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6154\" \/><br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nI don&#8217;t know why the female disciples were left out. Somehow they often get shortchanged.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_0023.jpg\" alt=\"Disciples\" title=\"Disciples\" width=\"500\" height=\"358\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6153\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Great Buddha Hall was designed with the help of the famous architect I.M. Pei, based on the architectural styles of the Tang Dynasty (CE 618-907).<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_0028.jpg\" alt=\"Great Buddha Hall\" title=\"Great Buddha Hall\" width=\"500\" height=\"358\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6152\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Inside is the largest indoor Buddha image in North America, a representation of the Vairocana Buddha over 40 feet tall. It sits on a lotus flower on top of a round pedestal carved with images of bodhisattvas. The pedestals is surrounded by a curved wall on top of which sit 10,000 little buddhas, symbolizing that all the buddhas in all the worlds reflect the Vairocana.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_0036.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"The Great Buddha\" width=\"500\" height=\"358\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6149\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the outside of the curved wall is a mural showing scenes from the life of Bodhidharma.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_0055.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Bodhidharma Mural\" width=\"500\" height=\"358\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6144\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The mural on the inner wall depicts scenes from the Pure Land.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_0045.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Pure Land Mural\" width=\"500\" height=\"358\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6147\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Amitabha (Amida) Buddha sits surrounded by bodhisattvas.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_0051.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Amida Buddha\" width=\"500\" height=\"358\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6145\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A wishing pool featuring an image of the Bodhisattva Kuan Yin (Kannon).<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_0057.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Kuan Yin Wishing Pool\" width=\"500\" height=\"358\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6143\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A jolly Hotei greets visitors at the main entrance.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_0058.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Hotei\" width=\"500\" height=\"358\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6142\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A traditional painting of the birth of Gautama Buddha.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_0060.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Birth of the Buddha\" width=\"500\" height=\"358\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6141\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A shrine used for funeral services is presided over by the Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha (Jizou).<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/IMG_0077.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Ashes Shrine\" width=\"500\" height=\"358\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6140\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next to the Great Buddha Hall is the Kuan Yin Hall, a smaller building in the same architectural style. The main floor features a large auditorium\/meditation hall.
