The movie won all sorts of awards in Japan and was widely praised by critics, but its American release sank without a ripple. This supports the general rule that an animated film that doesn&#8217;t even pretend to be for kids has no chance in America. For <a href=\"\/fun\/terms-used-in-anime-reviews#anime\">anime<\/a> fans it is worth a second look.\n<\/div>\n<p>The movie is reminiscent of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0033467\/\"><em>Citizen Kane<\/em><\/a>, though it is less political and more romantic. However this is not intended as a children&#8217;s movie and may not have much appeal to them.<\/p>\n<h3>Premise and Characters<\/h3>\n<div class=\"Character\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Demolished-Studio.png\" alt=\"Demolished Studio\" title=\"Demolished Studio\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4375\" \/>In an event that symbolizes the end of the twentieth century, the production facilities and back lot of <strong>Ginei Studios<\/strong> are being demolished. For decades this was the source of some of Japan&#8217;s greatest movies.\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Character\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Genya-Tachibana.png\" alt=\"Genya Tachibana\" title=\"Genya Tachibana\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4383\" \/><strong>Genya Tachibana<\/strong>, a respected documentary filmmaker, wants to commemorate the event by making a documentary about <strong>Chiyoko Fujiwara<\/strong>, the studio&#8217;s most famous actress.\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Character\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Kyouji-Ida.png\" alt=\"Kyouji Ida\" title=\"Kyouji Ida\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4388\" \/>His cameraman, <strong>Kyouji Ida<\/strong>, has only a vague notion who Chiyoko Fujiwara was, but he gamely goes along with the project.\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Character\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Bamboo-Path.png\" alt=\"Bamboo Path\" title=\"Bamboo Path\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4358\" \/>Though Chiyoko has lived as a recluse for the last 30 years, Genya has managed to obtain her consent to an interview. He says that it is the key to &#8220;the most important thing in the world,&#8221; and promises to explain what that means later.\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Character\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Chiyoko-Finds-Key.png\" alt=\"Chiyoko Finds Key\" title=\"Chiyoko Finds Key\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4364\" \/>Before he has a chance to explain, he is discovered and forced to flee. Chiyoko finds the key where he dropped it in the snow.\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Character\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Chiyoko-Running.png\" alt=\"Chiyoko Running\" title=\"Chiyoko Running\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4367\" \/>She runs to the train station, hoping to meet him there, but but she arrives just as the train pulls out of the station.\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Character\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Chiyoko-Ship.png\" alt=\"Chiyoko Ship\" title=\"Chiyoko Ship\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4368\" \/>He has told her that he plans to go to Manchuria. Hoping to find him there she defies her mother and agrees to act in the propaganda film. With the rest of the cast and crew she boards an ocean liner bound for Manchuria.\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Character\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Eiko-Shimao.png\" alt=\"Eiko Shimao\" title=\"Eiko Shimao\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4377\" \/><strong>Eiko Shimao<\/strong>, the star of the movie, greets her disdainfully.
