You have to keep <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sturgeon%27s_Law\">Sturgeon&#8217;s Law<\/a> in mind: &#8220;90% of everything is crap.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When fans look back on 2016 in the future, they won&#8217;t be remembering the 90%. It&#8217;s the other 10% that determines how successful a year is. So based on the 10%, 2016 wasn&#8217;t the best year ever, but it wasn&#8217;t all that bad.<\/p>\n<h1>Outstanding Anime of 2016<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Friends.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Friends-550x309.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"309\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11706\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Friends-550x309.jpg 550w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Friends-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Friends-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Friends-500x281.jpg 500w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Friends.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em><a href=\"\/fun\/2016\/01\/25\/erased-anime-early-impressions\/\"><strong>ERASED<\/strong><\/a><\/em> (<em>Boku Dake ga Inai Machi<\/em>) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crunchyroll.com\/erased\">Crunchyroll<\/a>) is a superbly executed fantasy thriller with crisp plotting, edge-of-your-seat tension and a fine ending.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Sakura-Rinne-Tamako.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Sakura-Rinne-Tamako-550x309.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"309\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11897\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Sakura-Rinne-Tamako-550x309.jpg 550w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Sakura-Rinne-Tamako-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Sakura-Rinne-Tamako-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Sakura-Rinne-Tamako-500x281.jpg 500w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Sakura-Rinne-Tamako.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a>Last year I called <a href=\"\/fun\/2015\/06\/21\/rinne-anime-midseason-review\/\"><strong><em>Rin-ne<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crunchyroll.com\/rin-ne\">Crunchyroll<\/a>) an &#8220;Outstanding&#8221; comedy. With the second season we&#8217;re at 48 episodes and if anything it&#8217;s funnier than ever. It&#8217;s incredibly hard for a comedy to keep up the pace for this long. (Consider the enormous drop-off in quality between the first and second seasons of <a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/2010\/10\/27\/squid-girl-anime-first-impressions\/\"><em>Squid Girl<\/em><\/a>, one of the few anime series to reach comparable levels of hilarity.) Kudos to the legendary talents of <a href=\"\/fun\/terms-used-in-anime-reviews#manga\">manga<\/a> giant Rumiko Takahashi.<\/p>\n<h1>Notable Anime of 2016<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Flying-witch.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Flying-witch-367x367.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"367\" height=\"367\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11782\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Flying-witch-367x367.jpg 367w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Flying-witch-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Flying-witch-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Flying-witch.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 367px) 100vw, 367px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe year&#8217;s best <a href=\"\/fun\/terms-used-in-anime-reviews\/#iyashikei\">iyashikei<\/a> anime was <em><strong>Flying Witch<\/strong><\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crunchyroll.com\/flying-witch\">Crunchyroll<\/a>), a charming story about a young witch who goes to live with her cousins in a small rural town.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Orange-poster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Orange-poster-258x367.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"258\" height=\"367\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11902\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Orange-poster-258x367.jpg 258w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Orange-poster-106x150.jpg 106w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Orange-poster-211x300.jpg 211w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Orange-poster.jpg 422w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 258px) 100vw, 258px\" \/><\/a>I see only one example of a good traditional <a href=\"\/fun\/terms-used-in-anime-reviews#shoujo\">shoujo<\/a> series: <strong><em>Orange<\/em><\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crunchyroll.com\/orange\">Crunchyroll<\/a>.) Aside from the fantasy premise, this is a smart and fairly realistic story about the difficulties involved in preventing teen suicide.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Natsume-Yuujinchou.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Natsume-Yuujinchou-259x367.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"367\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11823\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Natsume-Yuujinchou-259x367.jpg 259w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Natsume-Yuujinchou-106x150.jpg 106w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Natsume-Yuujinchou-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Natsume-Yuujinchou.jpg 557w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 259px) 100vw, 259px\" \/><\/a>I&#8217;m not giving <strong><em>Natsume Yujin-cho 5<\/em><\/strong> (<em>Natsume Yuujinchou Go<\/em>) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crunchyroll.com\/natsume-yujin-cho-5\">Crunchyroll<\/a>) an &#8220;Outstanding&#8221; award because its the fifth season of a long-running series which doesn&#8217;t break any new ground. A lonely bachelor begins to come to terms with his past when he takes in a lost little boy (who is actually a shape-shifting <a href=\"\/fun\/terms-used-in-anime-reviews#tanuki\">tanuki<\/a>.) <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Recording.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Recording-550x309.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"309\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11851\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Recording-550x309.jpg 550w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Recording-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Recording-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Recording-500x281.jpg 500w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Recording.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a>At last! <a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/2016\/12\/30\/girlish-number-ends\/\"><strong><em>Girlish Number<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crunchyroll.com\/girlish-number\">Crunchyroll<\/a>) finally gives the anime industry the treatment it deserves!<\/p>\n<p>Was this the year that the <a href=\"\/fun\/terms-used-in-anime-reviews\/#isekai\">isekai<\/a> genre finally wore out its welcome? We had a brutal deconstruction in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/2016\/04\/09\/grimgar-of-fantasy-and-ash-ends\/\">Grimgar<\/a><\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crunchyroll.com\/grimgar-of-fantasy-and-ash\">Crunchyroll<\/a>). <em>Konosuba<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crunchyroll.com\/konosuba-gods-blessing-on-this-wonderful-world\">Crunchyroll<\/a>) was a trashy parody of the genre. And of course <em>Girlish Number<\/em> told us a little too much about the people responsible for foisting this stuff on us.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Re-Zero-poster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Re-Zero-poster-367x367.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"367\" height=\"367\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11907\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Re-Zero-poster-367x367.jpg 367w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Re-Zero-poster-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Re-Zero-poster-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Re-Zero-poster.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 367px) 100vw, 367px\" \/><\/a>However <em><strong>Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-<\/strong><\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crunchyroll.com\/rezero-starting-life-in-another-world-\">Crunchyroll<\/a>) goes a long way toward redeeming the genre by giving it a <em>Groundhog Day<\/em> twist. The nebbish hero doesn&#8217;t somehow become heroic when transported to a fantasy world. He acts like an immature teenage <a href=\"\/fun\/terms-used-in-anime-reviews\/#otaku\">otaku<\/a>, the results are horrid, and he actually learns from his mistakes.<\/p>\n<h1>Special &#8220;Eat Your Vegetables&#8221; Award<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/The-Great-Passage.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/The-Great-Passage-256x367.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"256\" height=\"367\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11838\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/The-Great-Passage-256x367.jpg 256w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/The-Great-Passage-105x150.jpg 105w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/The-Great-Passage-209x300.jpg 209w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/The-Great-Passage.jpg 405w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nWhat do you get when some talented people get together to make an anime series that is inspiring, educational and morally uplifting? Something like <strong><em>The Great Passage<\/em><\/strong> (<em>Fune wo Amu<\/em>.) Really I don&#8217;t have anything bad to say about this series about the hard work and sacrifice that goes into creating a new dictionary. It&#8217;s totally admirable. It&#8217;s been excellent so far (my take <a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/2016\/02\/01\/showa-genroku-rakugo-shinju-anime-early-impressions\/\">here <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/2016\/04\/03\/showa-genroku-rakugo-shinju-ends\/\">here<\/a>) but it&#8217;s really a 2-<a href=\"\/fun\/terms-used-in-anime-reviews#cour\">cour<\/a> series in which only the first cour aired in 2016. Our talented but emotionally-scarred young Shoji player really needs to grow up and get a grip.
