There have been some watchable shows but the best ones have been sequels. What&#8217;s missing are those special shows that feel new and exciting.<\/p>\n<p>That aside, this season still has some new shows that seem interesting enough for me to recommend as &#8220;possibly worth your time.&#8221; Here they are, with the most promising first.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Natsume-Yuujinchou.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Natsume-Yuujinchou-106x150.jpg\" alt=\"natsume-yuujinchou\" width=\"106\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-11820\" \/><\/a> You can&#8217;t go far wrong with <strong><em>Natsume Yujin-cho 5<\/em><\/strong> (<em>Natsume Yuujinchou Go<\/em>) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crunchyroll.com\/natsume-yujin-cho-5\">Crunchyroll<\/a>). This is the <em>fifth<\/em> season of the critically-acclaimed series previously called <em>Natsume&#8217;s Book of Friends<\/em> in English. The writing remains as excellent as ever. If you are a fan of the earlier seasons then you shouldn&#8217;t miss this.<\/p>\n<p>If you aren&#8217;t familiar with the series it&#8217;s worth checking out, but I&#8217;d recommend that you watch at least the first season before watching this. (That&#8217;s the first 13 episodes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crunchyroll.com\/natsume-yujin-cho\">here<\/a>.)<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Poco.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Poco-124x150.jpg\" alt=\"poco\" width=\"124\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-11824\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Poco-124x150.jpg 124w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Poco-303x367.jpg 303w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Poco-248x300.jpg 248w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Poco.jpg 753w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 124px) 100vw, 124px\" \/><\/a> <strong><em>Poco&#8217;s Udon World<\/em><\/strong> (<em>Udon no Kuni no Kin-iro Kemari<\/em>) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crunchyroll.com\/pocos-udon-world\">Crunchyroll<\/a>) is yet another adorable-little-kid <a href=\"\/fun\/terms-used-in-anime-reviews#anime\">anime<\/a>, with the twist that this time the kid isn&#8217;t human. A lonely 30-year-old man goes back &#8220;temporarily&#8221; to his home town and ends up adopting a shape-shifting <a href=\"\/fun\/terms-used-in-anime-reviews#tanuki\">tanuki<\/a> who takes the form of a little boy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/3gatsu.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/3gatsu-106x150.jpg\" alt=\"3gatsu\" width=\"106\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-11826\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/3gatsu-106x150.jpg 106w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/3gatsu-259x367.jpg 259w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/3gatsu-768x1087.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/3gatsu-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/3gatsu.jpg 880w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 106px) 100vw, 106px\" \/><\/a> <strong><em>March Comes In Like a Lion<\/em><\/strong> (<em>Sangatsu no Lion<\/em>) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crunchyroll.com\/march-comes-in-like-a-lion\">Crunchyroll<\/a>) got off to a rough start but it&#8217;s turning out to be pretty good. This is a bittersweet comedy about a morose 17-year-old Shogi prodigy living alone in a Tokyo apartment and still devastated by the sudden death of his parents. He is more-or-less adopted by a family of 3 sisters who have also lost their parents. (Shogi is a Chinese form of chess that evolved independently from the Indian game that was also ancestral to European chess.)<\/p>\n<p>The first episode was pretty rough, starting in the middle of the story and relying on a confusing series of flashbacks to establish the premise. By the third episode things had fallen into place and it now looks very good.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Girlish-Number.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Girlish-Number-103x150.jpg\" alt=\"girlish-number\" width=\"103\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-11832\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Girlish-Number-103x150.jpg 103w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Girlish-Number-252x367.jpg 252w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Girlish-Number-206x300.jpg 206w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Girlish-Number.jpg 549w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 103px) 100vw, 103px\" \/><\/a> There have been anime series about the anime industry but usually they present a romanticized view in which everyone works hard together to produce something great. <strong><em>Girlish Number<\/em><\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crunchyroll.com\/girlish-number\">Crunchyroll<\/a>) presents a cynical view of an industry where everyone has to <em>pretend<\/em> to be enthusiastic about a series that they all know is really crap.<\/p>\n<p>The main character, an aspiring voice actress named Chitose, is very cute and naive, but the cuteness is just an act. She&#8217;s actually ruthlessly ambitious, an aspiring <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/All_About_Eve\">Eve Harrington<\/a>. Acting cute is her only real talent; she&#8217;s too inexperienced to realize that she&#8217;s actually a pretty bad actress and will have to work hard to improve her skills if she&#8217;s going to get anywhere.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/FlipFlappers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/FlipFlappers-550x298.jpg\" alt=\"flipflappers\" width=\"550\" height=\"298\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11834\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/FlipFlappers-550x298.jpg 550w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/FlipFlappers-150x81.jpg 150w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/FlipFlappers-768x416.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/FlipFlappers-500x271.jpg 500w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/FlipFlappers.jpg 1480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a> <strong><em>Flip Flappers<\/em><\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crunchyroll.com\/flip-flappers\">Crunchyroll<\/a>) is an extremely offbeat take on the <a href=\"\/fun\/terms-used-in-anime-reviews#mahou_shoujo\">magical girl<\/a> genre. A seemingly ordinary girl is recruited by a crazy magical girl to join an organization called FlipFlap and hunt for magical objects in bizarre parallel universes. Weird but amusing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Izetta.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Izetta-100x150.jpg\" alt=\"izetta\" width=\"100\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-11836\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Izetta-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Izetta-245x367.jpg 245w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Izetta-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Izetta.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a> In <strong><em>Izetta: The Last Witch<\/em><\/strong> (<em>Shuumatsu no Izetta<\/em>) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crunchyroll.com\/izetta-the-last-witch\">Crunchyroll<\/a>) cute girls try to defend a small alpine kingdom against the evil &#8220;Germanian Empire&#8221; in an alternate-universe version of World War II. The intent here seems to be to imitate Studio Ghibli both in style and tone, but with more <a href=\"\/fun\/terms-used-in-anime-reviews#fan_service\">fan service<\/a>. (Izetta can use magic, but only at certain locations, and apparently only when scantily-clad.)<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t really Ghibli quality but if you must imitate something you could do a lot worse.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/The-Great-Passage.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/The-Great-Passage-105x150.jpg\" alt=\"the-great-passage\" width=\"105\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-11838\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/The-Great-Passage-105x150.jpg 105w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/The-Great-Passage-256x367.jpg 256w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/The-Great-Passage-209x300.jpg 209w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/The-Great-Passage.jpg 405w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 105px) 100vw, 105px\" \/><\/a> I have to give credit to the producers of <strong><em>The Great Passage<\/em><\/strong> (<em>Fune wo Amu<\/em>.) I takes a lot of guts to make an anime series about lexicographers compiling a dictionary. This has to be the ultimate nerdy story about nerds.<\/p>\n<p>The series focuses on a somewhat autistic young lexicographer who falls hard for his landlady&#8217;s daughter. His slightly less nerdy colleagues alternate between teasing and encouraging him.<\/p>\n<p>This is being streamed on Amazon Prime Video but is not yet available in the U.S.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This year had a promising start last winter but the rest of the year has been uninspiring.
