{"id":10210,"date":"2014-04-05T18:19:37","date_gmt":"2014-04-05T22:19:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/?p=10210"},"modified":"2014-04-05T18:19:37","modified_gmt":"2014-04-05T22:19:37","slug":"nagi-no-asukara-ends","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/2014\/04\/05\/nagi-no-asukara-ends\/","title":{"rendered":"Nagi no Asukara Ends"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I enjoyed <em>Nagi no Asukara<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crunchyroll.com\/nagi-no-asukara-nagi-asu-a-lull-in-the-sea\">Crunchyroll<\/a>) but it&#8217;s not perfect. It has some pacing problems. Of course that&#8217;s common with Japanese TV shows. Hopefully you have some overall story to tell, but you have to organize it into one or two cours, each consisting of 12 or 13 episodes of 24 minutes each. For ratings reasons each <a href=\"\/fun\/terms-used-in-anime-reviews#cour\">cour<\/a> should end at a dramatic high point and each individual episode must be interesting enough to keep people watching, all while advancing the overall plot.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Eyecatch-on-Seawall.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Eyecatch-on-Seawall-550x309.jpg\" alt=\"Eyecatch on Seawall\" width=\"550\" height=\"309\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Eyecatch-on-Seawall-550x309.jpg 550w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Eyecatch-on-Seawall-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Eyecatch-on-Seawall-500x281.jpg 500w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Eyecatch-on-Seawall.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nA very small number of shows do it perfectly. <em>Nagi no Asukara<\/em> has some great episodes, but also a fair number that drag.<\/p>\n<p>But now it&#8217;s time to look back and evaluate the series as a whole. I think it&#8217;s pretty good. It has an innovative premise, terrific artwork, likeable though flawed characters and a story with real emotional resonance. The show makes this pretty clear from the beginning with its deliberate use of &#8220;magical unrealism&#8221; and shout-outs to <em>The Little Mermaid<\/em>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Uroko-sama-with-flames.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Uroko-sama-with-flames-550x309.jpg\" alt=\"Uroko-sama with flames\" width=\"550\" height=\"309\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Uroko-sama-with-flames-550x309.jpg 550w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Uroko-sama-with-flames-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Uroko-sama-with-flames-500x281.jpg 500w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Uroko-sama-with-flames.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n(Actually the ending seems more influenced by the classic Japanese tale of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Urashima_Tar%C5%8D\">Tarou Urashima<\/a> and other stories involving Ryuujin, the dragon king of the sea.)<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Akira-and-Akari.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Akira-and-Akari-550x309.jpg\" alt=\"Akira and Akari\" width=\"550\" height=\"309\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Akira-and-Akari-550x309.jpg 550w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Akira-and-Akari-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Akira-and-Akari-500x281.jpg 500w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Akira-and-Akari.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe middle part of the story suggests that we are going to get some sort of parable about global warming, but that&#8217;s a red herring. It&#8217;s really a parable about the nature of love, with an ending that&#8217;s not exactly tragic, but not entirely happy either.<\/p>\n<p>Disconcertingly <a href='javascript:void(null);' onclick=\"s_toggleDisplay(document.getElementById('SID1111453171'), this, 'Show &#9660;', 'Hide &#9650;');\">Show &#9660;<\/a><\/p>\n<div id='SID1111453171' style='display:none;'>\nit turns out to be largely about two characters who don&#8217;t even appear on stage until the final episode. And one of them turns out to be the world&#8217;s biggest idiot.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Sayu-and-Kaname.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Sayu-and-Kaname-550x309.jpg\" alt=\"Sayu and Kaname\" width=\"550\" height=\"309\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Sayu-and-Kaname-550x309.jpg 550w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Sayu-and-Kaname-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Sayu-and-Kaname-500x281.jpg 500w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Sayu-and-Kaname.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThere&#8217;s also the fact that the main characters spend a lot of time acting like a bunch of 14-year-olds. If <em>any<\/em> of the characters in <em>Romeo and Juliet<\/em> had even a modicum of sense there would have been no story.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Sea-Gods-shrine.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Sea-Gods-shrine-550x309.jpg\" alt=\"Sea God&#039;s shrine\" width=\"550\" height=\"309\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Sea-Gods-shrine-550x309.jpg 550w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Sea-Gods-shrine-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Sea-Gods-shrine-500x281.jpg 500w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Sea-Gods-shrine.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIt&#8217;s often fun to examine the names of the characters in Japanese stories to look for symbolism that would be obvious to Japanese viewers who know the <a href=\"\/fun\/terms-used-in-anime-reviews\/#kanji\">kanji<\/a>. Lets try it here and see if anything makes sense:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Chisaki-and-Tsumugu.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Chisaki-and-Tsumugu-550x309.jpg\" alt=\"Chisaki and Tsumugu\" width=\"550\" height=\"309\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Chisaki-and-Tsumugu-550x309.jpg 550w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Chisaki-and-Tsumugu-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Chisaki-and-Tsumugu-500x281.jpg 500w, https:\/\/bugfox.net\/fun\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Chisaki-and-Tsumugu.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Sakishima family:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tomoru: lamp, torch.<\/li>\n<li>Akari: light, illumination.<\/li>\n<li>Hikari: light. (Clearly there&#8217;s a family tradition here.)<\/li>\n<li>Akira: clear. (His father would have named him, and he chose something that sounded like &#8220;Akari&#8221;.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Others<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Manaka: middle, center.<\/li>\n<li>Chisaki: (written in <a href=\"\/fun\/terms-used-in-anime-reviews\/#hiragana\">hiragana<\/a>) probably either &#8220;small spirit&#8221; or &#8220;wise\/enlightened spirit.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Kaname: pivot, cornerstone, keystone.<\/li>\n<li>Tsumugu: spinning (thread).<\/li>\n<li>Miuna: &#8220;beautiful sea.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Sayu: &#8220;hot water.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Uroko: scale (on a fish).<\/li>\n<li>Ojoshi: Presumably a title: honorific prefix + <em>joshi<\/em> (&#8220;girl&#8221;).<\/li>\n<ol>\n<\/ol>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I enjoyed Nagi no Asukara (Crunchyroll) but it&#8217;s not perfect.
